Just a short drive from our vacation home in Indio lies one of the most breathtaking attractions in the Coachella Valley—the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Known as the “world’s largest rotating tramcar,” this unforgettable ride takes you from the desert floor to the majestic cliffs of Mt. San Jacinto State Park in just 10 minutes.
The tram journey begins at the Valley Station (elevation 2,643 feet) and ascends to the Mountain Station at over 8,500 feet above sea level. As the tram car slowly rotates, you’ll enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of rugged canyons, rocky cliffs, and the entire Coachella Valley stretching out below.
At the top, you’ll step into a completely different world:
Summer Escape – While it’s hot in the desert, the mountain air is often 30–40 degrees cooler. Perfect for hiking the 50+ miles of trails.
Winter Wonderland – In colder months, the mountaintop transforms into a snowy playground. Visitors can go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or simply enjoy the beauty of the snow-covered pines.
The Mountain Station features two restaurants with incredible views:
Peaks Restaurant – A fine dining experience showcasing California cuisine.
Pines Café – A casual option, perfect for families.
Don’t forget to stop by the observation decks, where you’ll get sweeping views of the desert floor, the Salton Sea, and beyond.
Buy tickets in advance during peak seasons (spring and fall).
Bring a jacket—the temperature difference is dramatic compared to Indio.
Plan at least half a day to enjoy the ride, trails, and dining.
